Environmental information Regulations
The Freedom of Information Act gives rights of access to a wide
range of information. However, rights of access to environmental
information held by public authorities including local authorities
are provided by a separate statutory regime, the Environmental
Information Regulations 2004.
Environmental information covered by the regulations includes
the state of the air, atmosphere, water, soil, land, landscape, as
well as factors affecting the above elements such as substances,
energy, noise, radiation or waste, emissions and discharges
into the environment.
Interpretation of environmental information
requests
Any request for information should be in writing and should
include:
- the address of the property concerned;
- what information is required;
- a map and grid reference (if possible);
- specific concerns if they have been highlighted previously;
and
- a response name, address and contact number.
The response will include a written reply to the evaluation and
interpretation of data, with as much information as possible for
home buyers, conveyancing solicitors, environmental consultants or
other interested parties.
